Welcome to the Birthing Project website

The Nunavik Birthing Project

Much of our current knowledge about Indigenous women’s experiences with perinatal depression (depression experienced during or after pregnancy) in Canada is based on accounts of First Nations and M.tis women. As such, there is an important knowledge gap about perinatal depression among Inuit women in Canada. Related, there is limited knowledge about the perinatal mental health of Inuit women with medically high-risk pregnancies who are evacuated to southern maternity wards for childbirth.

The goal of this project is to better understand and determine the associations among childbirth evacuation, perinatal mental health, and infant growth/development for Inuit in Nunavik. The study results will have direct relevance to healthcare policy and service delivery in Nunavik. For instance, our validation of an Inuit-specific perinatal mental health screening tool (the EPDS-Inuktitut) has relevance for clinical practice and Inuit population health.
