Meet the Research Investigators

  • Zoua Vang

    Principal nvestigator

    Dr  Zoua Vang is the founding Director of the Indigenous Maternal Infant Health & Wellbeing (IMIHW) Lab. She is a William Dawson Scholar, Associate Professor of Sociology, and Investigator of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC). She received her BA in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and her MA and PhD in Sociology from Harvard University.

  • Robert Gagnon

    Principal Co-Investigator

    Dr. Robert Gagnon completed his medical degree and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Université de Montréal, then continued postgraduate training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. As an active member of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, Dr Gagnon is involved in the Diagnostic Imaging committee and the MFM committee; he has also been involved in the formulation of several SOGC clinical guidelines.

  • Laurence Kirmayer

    Co-Investigator

    Laurence J. Kirmayer, MD, FRCPC, FCAHS, FRSC is James McGill Professor and Director, Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, McGill University. He directs the Culture & Mental Health Research Unit at the Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry, Jewish General Hospital, in Montreal, where he conducts research on culturally responsive mental health services, psychiatric anthropology, and the philosophy of psychiatry. 

  • Elena Labranche

    Co-Investigator

    Elena is the Director of Inuit Values and Practices, Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS). Ms. Labranche oversees programs and services, including the Midwifery Education Program, to ensure Inuit values and practices are included within the mandate of the NRBHSS. She will serve as the key liason between the research team and the NRBHSS, help oversee the planning and implementation of the project, including knowledge transfer and dissemination activities in Nunavik.

  • Edouardo Chachamovich

    Co-Investigator

    Eduardo Chachamovich, MD, PhD, completed his PhD at UFRGS (Brazil) / University of Edinburgh (Scotland), where he explored modern psychometric approaches to measure multidimensional health phenomena. Eduardo Chachamovich’s work focuses mainly on social and clinical determinants of mental health in Aboriginal populations. He is also interested in exploring adequate strategies to develop valid and culturally-appropriate measures for mental disorders.
